Government Grants For Green Homes

Renewable Energy Grants

There are a range of renewable energy grants and incentives for homeowners and businesses to invest in renewable energy systems. From grants for capital installation costs to ongoing payments for the energy you generate, there a a number of incentives to explore for all types of low-carbon systems.

These include:

What Are Green Grants

Government Green Grants

As part of its commitment to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050, the UK Government launched its landmark Net Zero Strategy, laying out measures to reduce its dependency on fossil fuels and move towards a green and sustainable future. There are a number of grants and incentives for homeowners and businesses to utilise to either help towards the capital costs of installing a low carbon heating system or apply for regular payments for the energy they consume

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme

What Is The Boiler Upgrade Scheme

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) will come into effect at the beginning of April and is expected to replace the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), which is due to end in March 2022. The scheme is designed to encourage homeowners to switch to low carbon heating systems through a grant incentive of up to £5000 or £7000 for Ground Source Heat Pumps. This will enable the phasing out of fossil fuels in the coming years. These technologies include Air Source Heat PumpsBiomass Heating and Ground Source Heat Pumps

Who Can Apply For The Funding From The Boiler Upgrade Scheme

Homeowners can apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme April 2022 after they have consulted with and received at least one quotation from a certified installer. Once the vouchers have been issued, work must be completed within 3 months for biomass boilers and air source heat pumps.

The eligibility criteria for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme are similar to that of Domestic RHI as the grant is expected to replace RHI in helping existing homes. These include:

  1. A valid EPC that has a rating between A and G and is within 10 years
  2. The property must be an existing building or custom made construction (retrofit). The Clean Home Grant is not available for new build properties.
  3. You must get at least 2 quotes from an MSC approved contractor to carry out the work
  4. Approved contractors music hold MCS and be TrustMark registered under Government backed scheme

The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)

The Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (Domestic RHI) is a government financial incentive to promote the use of renewable heat. Switching to heating systems that use eligible energy sources can help the UK reduce its carbon emissions and meet its renewable energy targets

Since opening in April 2014, the scheme has already seen thousands of people successfully join and receive payments. The Domestic RHI provides financial incentives to owners of domestic properties who install renewable heating technologies such as ground source heat pumps and solar thermal on their premises.

The RHI is due to close in March 2022 to make way for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

Smart Export Guarantee

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) came into effect on 1 January 2020 and is currently the only type of solar panel funding available in the UK.

Following the closure of the Feed-in Tariff (FIT) scheme to new applicants in March 2019, the government recognised the need to pay small-scale renewable energy generators for the electricity they export to the grid. Consequently, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) introduced the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG).

You may be eligible to apply if you have one of the following renewable energy generating technologies:

  • Solar PV panels
  • A wind turbine
  • Hydro
  • Anaerobic digestion
  • Micro combined heat and power (micro-CHP)
